I want to be a sound

Today I write about a person I remembered as dancer Maki Morishita said “I want to become a sound” while she is dancing in the last blog.

The person is Canadian pianist Glenn Gould.

I have heard of the name before, but until recently I did not know well. And, I knew Gould was at a school to study contemporary art. Person who immersed in music, that life, of course was all artistic.

In words that describe Glenn Gould, there are geniuses, geniuses, geniuses, etc. In addition to the performance evaluation, it seems that such behavior was also said from personality and behavior of private life.

– Graduated from the Toronto Royal Conservatory at the youngest age of 14
– Beethoven’s piano concerto No. 4 first movement played concert debut
– The first album Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” recorded at NY at the age of 23 records the best sales of classic records in 1956
– At the age of 32 declaring suddenly stopping the concert activity at the peak of popularity, staying in the studio, becoming a pianist specializing in recording and enhancing his art
– In an extremely cold weather, even in the summer, he wore a thick sweater under a thick jacket, wearing a old coat, muffler, fur hat
– Fidelity abnormal
– Absolutely do not drink tap water
– He was a very small meal, usually taking only a small amount of biscuits and fruit juice, supplements (vitamins, antibiotics)
– Refused to play unless it was a dedicated chair
– Leaning towards Bach

And, that style of play.
It becomes extremely stupid with a stooping posture, the chair makes a sound, Gould humming, and he also commanded with an empty hand.
His appearance looks strange, but it looks at the beauty of its sound and hand skill and the appearance of immersed Gould. Something that is integrated with sounds, songs, Bach, piano and various things is somewhat divine. What is it, the charm that keeps listening to this forever? If you look at a person in a super meditating state that is in the zone, people who are watching also feel that there is some sort of healing effect.

He said “The recording will release the musicians from the stress of the hell of the concert by recording. Instead of practicing the same song just for the concert, I will challenge new songs more and more, I can try all kinds of interpretation without fear of failure”. I just admire the posture that just faces the music.

And it is said that Gould’s greatest achievement is to show the world new performance style and interpretation in Bach’s performance and to build a solid reach point corresponding to it. That’s why it is called Gould-Bach. And, including the style that it plays and challenging, including the virtue of persuading the belief, it is classic but also it is said to be like a rock. There seems to be reasons why he is popular not only for genuine classical music fans, for example from art lovers.

It seems that there was an idea for art, he said “The purpose of art is not to release the instantaneous adrenaline, but rather to build up the spiritual state of marvel and silence over a lifetime”. And then, his favorite books of Gould were “The Magic Mountain” by Thomas Mann and “Kusamakura” by Soseki Natsume. Although it is Gould who had many Soseki’s books, regarding “Kusamakura” there are 4 different books of translation and also owns the Japanese version, it seems to be a “Kusamakura” written on on his deathbed. One scholar says that the last 15 years were quite influenced by “Kusamakura”.

Un expected connection with Japan. And I have to read “Kusamakura” that Gould was greatly affected!

So, the immersive gold is here. He sings!

Soseki Natsume “Kusamakura”
