Movie “Silence”

In the last blog I wrote about lost in translation (it is impossible to correctly transcode different cultures altogether and something will always be lost), today is about understanding and belief in cross cultural thought when I saw the movie “Silence”.

Original piece was written by Shusaku Endo, the movie director Martin Scorsese. It is a masterpiece that was translated in more than 20 countries and was finally made into a film after 28 years since Scorsese first read the original. Since it is 2 hours and 40 minutes, you also need physical fitness to watch, but I think there is a reasonable response.

I have not read the original and I do not know much about Christianity, perhaps my thoughts would change if I study the original and study Christianity more, but I write obliviously watching movies without various knowledge and information and write what I thought.

(Synopsis to the end)
Missionary Rodrigues and Garupe who came to propaganda all the way from Portugal to all the way to Japan. While being martyred also with the Garupe who came to Japan together, the Rodrigues caught by the Edo government was told that the believers who have already pledged religion are not allowed unless Rodrigues relocates. Rodrigues was struck with the ultimate dilemma whether to save those who suffer according to the teachings of Jesus by sacrificing their own religion, whether to keep their own faith.

And imagining that stepping on a ‘treading picture’ (that was used as a test to determine a person’s loyalty) is an act that exceeds death for believers, there is something immeasurable about Rodrigues’s suffering in the end according to the step. However, Rodrigues has reached the point of understanding God’s teaching by stepping on a step according to Jesus’ words “I was not silent, I was suffering with you”, “Who can say that the weak are not more suffering than the stronger ones?”.

After Rodrigues lived in Japan as a Buddhist and was cremated as a Buddhist, but in his hand there was a cross that was inherited from believers who martyred …

————-

With such a feeling, the story develops with Rodrigues’s eyes, and it becomes a movie that makes you think variously even after the viewing is over.

And just after I finished watching my thoughts, did the faith of Rodrigues and missionaries and the believers of Nagasaki were the same? Although there is a common item as a style of believing in Christianity, its actual condition is very personal, and in the real sense it was shared with faith in “God” as a common thing Wonder? I was wondering.

I felt the difficulty of sharing subjects that we could not understand easily in words, and if I thought it was different … I think I am a bit scared. In short, the difference of recognition due to the difference in interpretation. But I think that it is difficult to get in touch with the other people’s “the same” as the movements because ideas of my heart change from day to day (there are occasions when it can not be handled).

On the premise of “different”, I feel very happy when there is a feeling to share even a little (it is like so!), I think that efforts are communication pleasure. “Different” is also a new discovery.

Even in the last of the movie, faith was a very personal thing, not being decided from outside, that it was originally not controllable in the first place, that there was a cross in the hand of Rodrigues cremated as a Buddhist. I guess it’s all about the things you believe in one universe for one person. And I wish that Shusaku Endo also said that, I interpreted, how about you?

Also, I am also looking forward to myself how would I interpret myself when I read the original, and then visit the Churches in Nagasaki that I’ve long wanted to go.

Also, this movie is my favorite actors appearing and the picture is beautiful, so it is recommended if there are people who are not watching!

Andrew Garfield
“BOY A”, “I AM HERE”, “Never Let Me Go”

Adam Driver
“Inside Llewyn Davis”, “Paterson”

Both of them are very popular actors now, but even the early and small movies are very wonderful.

Also, Japanese actors were very wonderful, I am particularly amazing in this movie! I thought, Yosuke Kubozuka (Kichijiro), Issey Ogata (Inoue Masashige), Shinya Tsukamoto (Mokichi), Yoshi Oida (Ichizo). The Fumie master Kichijiro, Inoue Inoue Masashige’s mean and hateful feeling, Straightness through Mokichi’s beliefs and the presence of an wordless old man Ichizo.

I think that the theme of the movie is faith, also the word about Scorsese’s during shooting was very impressive, “The attitudes towards acting of Japanese actors including all extras was very beautiful such as monks, it was enough to make me jealous.”

What I thought is this kind of feeling, I think that it is a movie can interpret variously from various angles really. And I think there is more depth and weight as wider range of interpretation, so I want to interact with such works a lot.
